The first day of cosmetology school was exciting, nerve racking, and a dream come true. The first few weeks didn’t turn out as exciting as I thought it was going to be. It was all about introduction, vision, rules, and nothing at all that I wanted. We sat in a classroom from probably 8 AM until 3:30 PM – very exhausting and boring. We did lots of theory. I learned a lot about skin, nails, and hair conditions. I basically found myself back in biology class. Although very informative, and necessary for the field, I just wanted that part over with. Finally, after the long weeks of theory, we got to braid a mannequin’s hair! Now, that’s kind of what we signed up for! Weeks came and went, and I did a lot more with the mannequins. I braided, washed and blow dried, roller set, perm rolled, but still no haircuts.
The entire class was all waiting to chop off some hair, but none of that was happening yet. Finally, the time came to cut the mannequin’s hair. We were all like kids on a Christmas morning! After a few months of practice on the dolls, the salon doors opened to the public, and we were able to work on some real people! It was magical! We did everything from manicures to hair and makeup. We did it all. We were a small group of about 16 students by the time we graduated. I remember being the only black girl in the group, so naturally they directed all the relaxers to me. Wait a minute now! This girl right here would love to do some highlights too!
Now, I must say, some students did special treatment towards some of the fun services. Anyhow, I still enjoyed school. I finished the program in 1 year and took state Board almost right away. It was a great experience, but luckily I wouldn’t have go back though it again!
