December Blog

I want to take this month to thank every one of you who helped me get to where I am today. I cannot say it enough…thank you.

2018 was a big year with a lot of changes in my life. Some were good, and some were unexpected. No matter how I felt about them, at this moment I’m grateful for it all. A strongly believe in “everything happens when it’s supposed to happen”. I know we all want to be in control of everything in our lives, just remember that sometimes the worst things can turn out to be the best things. Happy holiday, merry Christmas and remember to spread love!

After a long silence . . .

After a long silence, I’m happy to be back to share my thoughts with you guys. This year has been an amazing year. A lot of changes, a lot of growth, and more changes to come before the end of the year. I want to thank each one of you for being on this wonderful journey with me. I’m committing to you today to write 1 blog each month, just to keep in touch. I would love it if you could keep it interactive. Suggestion of topics is welcomed.

Are you changing with the season? Every season, we tend to want a change. It’s ok if you do, but you don’t have to. A change doesn’t need to be extreme. It can mean just a slight tonality change in your hair color or just ½ inch shorter or longer on your haircut. If you are like me, chances are it’s gonna be drastic. No matter what you choose, make sure you are happy with it? A style worn with confidence will always suit you!

Cosmetology School

The first day of cosmetology school was exciting, nerve racking, and a dream come true. The first few weeks didn’t turn out as exciting as I thought it was going to be. It was all about introduction, vision, rules, and nothing at all that I wanted. We sat in a classroom from probably 8 AM until 3:30 PM – very exhausting and boring. We did lots of theory. I learned a lot about skin, nails, and hair conditions. I basically found myself back in biology class. Although very informative, and necessary for the field, I just wanted that part over with. Finally, after the long weeks of theory, we got to braid a mannequin’s hair! Now, that’s kind of what we signed up for! Weeks came and went, and I did a lot more with the mannequins. I braided, washed and blow dried, roller set, perm rolled, but still no haircuts.

The entire class was all waiting to chop off some hair, but none of that was happening yet. Finally, the time came to cut the mannequin’s hair. We were all like kids on a Christmas morning! After a few months of practice on the dolls, the salon doors opened to the public, and we were able to work on some real people! It was magical! We did everything from manicures to hair and makeup. We did it all. We were a small group of about 16 students by the time we graduated. I remember being the only black girl in the group, so naturally they directed all the relaxers to me. Wait a minute now! This girl right here would love to do some highlights too!

Now, I must say, some students did special treatment towards some of the fun services. Anyhow, I still enjoyed school. I finished the program in 1 year and took state Board almost right away. It was a great experience, but luckily I wouldn’t have go back though it again!

My story…The Beginning

First of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone! I am new to this whole blogging thing, but so excited to get this kicked off! I thought I would start the year off with a little a bit of my story and how I got in this crazy, beautiful cosmetology life.

My story….the beginning…

I grew up in Haiti and moved to the USA before my 21st birthday. I know this is the land of opportunity, but I would not trade my childhood for anything.

When I got here, I decided to go to school for engineering. Why? Because growing up I said that is what I wanted to be- crazy me! A friend of mine convinced me to pursue cosmetology instead, since I have always loved making others look and feel beautiful. He helped me see how miserable I was trying to get a degree in engineering, and how passionate I was about my gift in the beauty area. After a while, and many attempts at other things, I accepted the fact that cosmetology was my calling. I started school and graduated within a year. It wasn’t always easy, because at the time, I was working full time and going to school full time, plus I also had another part-time job. Now let’s not forget that I was in my early 20s, so naturally, I had a social life. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep very much. I sure wouldn’t try that lifestyle now!

I’m so happy to have chosen the path I’m on today because it’s always a blessing. One thing I have learned is to never let society dictate what you do with your life. At the end of the day, you are who matters the most in the equation, because it’s your story.

I can’t wait to see what new stories 2016 has in store for all of us!
